Choose your name well
A recent survey by UK domain name and hosting company Fasthosts found that 41 percent of business in the UK spend less than one hour deciding on the domain name for their online business.
Your domain name is your identity and brand on the internet. But new business all too often treat their domain name as an afterthought. As a business you should spend a few days thinking about the domain name for your website.
The first consideration is to check if your preffered domain name is available. And even if it isn’t try to avoid hyphenated names since these are hard to spell out to verbally: “www dot mybusiness hyphen…”. “Is that the dash?”. It’s messy.
Also try to use the best extension i.e. .co.uk, .com for your business territory. Try to not be tempted to buy a .eu domain name unless your business takes place throughout the European Union. A .net is commonly used by network providers and it’s best avoided if you don’t operate in this sector.
What about deliberate mis-spellings like the one used by the famous photo sharing site flickr. These domain names can work well particularly if the domain name is short and you market it extensively so it becomes part of the vocabulary.
Above all try and keep the domain name as short as possible and make it relevant to your company or product.
