Community Strategy Consultation
In October 2002 the ESP produced Enfield's Future, the draft Community Strategy for the Borough. Enfield's Future outlines the kind of place Enfield should be in 10 years time and sets out this vision:
"To make Enfield one of the best places in which to live, work, study and do business. A place that enhances the prospects of all its people and values their diversity; a place that is clean and safe, and manages its resources for future generations; a place where people learn for life; a place where residents are involved in their communities; a place that is prosperous and healthy, enjoying good access to the best economic, educational and cultural opportunities; a place with high quality public services for everyone."
Enfield's Future also sets out challenges facing Enfield, priorities identified by local people, and proposed actions the ESP will undertake to achieve the vision.
In October 2002 10,000 copies of the draft Community Strategy were distributed throughout the borough. Since then the ESP has been consulting with residents, businesses, voluntary organisations and public sector agencies to find out whether the vision, challenges and priorities raised in Enfield's Future are relevant to local people's concerns and priorities.
Everybody was given the opportunity to provide feedback and comments to the ESP. This consultation period ran from October to the end of December 2002. We had a remarkable response with a total of 1,300 individuals and over 250 organisations being involved in the consultation.
Enfield Strategic Partnership Civic Forum
The next Civic Forum event will be held on 12th June 2004. It will be an opportunity for local residents, businesses and voluntary and community groups to find out how ESP has been improving the quality of life in Enfield and what achievements have ben made in implementing the Community Strategy. Watch this space for more information on the Civic Forum.
Following on from the consultation period the ESP held a Civic Forum event at Enfield County Upper School on the 25th January 2003. This forum provided an opportunity for local people to be involved in the final stage of consultation
The objectives of the Civic Forum were:
- To introduce the Enfield Strategic Partnership and the work of its constituent parts.
- To shape the final version of Enfield's Future by making recommendations to the ESP as to what should be included in the full Community Strategy.
- To promote community involvement and bring stakeholders together.
- To highlight work underway to reduce crime and the fear of crime in Enfield.
The Civic Forum was a half-day event which included the following:
- A welcome by Councillor Michael Rye, Leader of the Council and Chairman of the ESP Board
- A presentations on working together for a cleaner, safer Borough
- A presentation on the Enfield Strategic Partnership - who we are and what we do,
- A presentation on Enfield's Future, the draft Community Strategy - what it is and what people have said about it.
The second half of the event consisted of seven workshops focusing on one of the seven themes identified in the Community Strategy. The 7 workshop themes were:
- Cleaner and greener
- Strong neighbourhoods, strong communities
- Living safely
- Learn for life
- Thriving and healthy
- Culturally vibrant
- Striving for the best public services
The aims of the workshop are to discuss which issues within the draft Community Strategy are considered most interesting, which issues should be tackled first, and identify any issues that are currently not covered.
The event was a success and well attended with a total of 130 participants. Of these approximately 30% were residents; 50% representatives from a voluntary/ community or business organisation; and 20% from statutory agencies, such as the Council, police etc.
As a result of all the consultation conducted 2002 and the feedback from the Civic Forum the ESP now has a wealth of information regarding what local people want to see amended in the final version of Enfield's Future. It is now the ESP's task to incorporate this information and create the final version of the Community Strategy, which will be produced in May 2003.
For more information an ESP Civic Forum Report (Adobe Acrobat - 226k .pdf file) has been produced.
The next Civic Forum event will be held on 12th June 2004. It will be an opportunity for local residents, businesses and voluntary and community groups to find out how ESP has been improving the quality of life in Enfield and what achievements have been made in implementing the Community Strategy. Shaping Edmontons Future
The aim of "Shaping Edmonton's Future" was to consult and engage the local community to create:
· A greater awareness about the Neighbourhood Renewal and Community Strategies
· Greater understanding of the deep-seated problems confronting the five highly targeted wards with increased ownership of the proposed solutions
· Greater ownership by ALL involved
· Stronger Neighbourhood Renewal and Community Strategies.
Day One was an open day, with entertainment, to encourage and motivate local people through performance, children's activities and displays about various projects for Edmonton. The emphasis was on activities currently being funded through Neighbourhood Renewal. An element of the displays included a 'Wall of Wonder' for people to state their memories of the past, views of the present and hopes for the future in Edmonton.
The aim of Day Two and Three was to create a common vision for Edmonton and agree the barriers blocking this vision. From this actions could be identified to help overcome the obstacles, allowing the achievement of the common vision. The event was well attended over the three days, including participation from residents, public agencies and voluntart and community organisations.
The event resulted in a shared vision of Edmonton's Future, and the development of four strategic direction groups which will take the action plan forward to achieve this vision.
The four groups were: -
Including People
Building and Celebrating Edmonton's Positive Image
Allowing the Community to Take the Lead
Getting What's Needed.
